Canine massage is the manipulation of the skin and
muscles to help increase circulation to all of the
organs and tissues within the animals body. There
are several massage techniques used such as
effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, and passive
touch to name a few. Massage has proven to have a
positive influence on both mental and physical
conditions of dogs of all ages.
Senior dogs
whom are suffering from arthritis or hip dysplasia
can have very limited mobility. Common symptoms
include pain, muscle stiffness, and decreased
activity. By massaging the dog on a regular basis ,
combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise,
this can give your dog a better quality of life in
his last years. He will have an increase in energy
along with better flexibility and range of motion.
Puppies
reap the benefits of massage because by increasing
the circulation to their bones and muscles, it can
ease growth stages and also promote better motor
movement by stimulation of the paw pads. Puppies
experience growing pains and massage can help to
alleviate some of that along with less tension.
For insecure, fearful, abused or dogs adopted
from shelters, massage can help to increase
trust with humans. This will help the dog to get
used to human touch in a positive way. So many
animals these days come from horrific conditions
and building trust can take some time. While some
dogs may respond immediately, others may take
several months to build their confidence. Puppy mill
dogs for instance, live their entire lives in cages
with little contact with humans and can take quite
some time to rehabilitate. The abuse they endure and
the living conditions they reside in are so horrific
, but with a lot of love, patience and therapy,
these animals will give back so much love in return
and there is nothing more rewarding than to see the
life come back into one of these souls.
Reiki
along with
Massage,
work hand in hand and yield positive results.
For show, working, and agility dogs, massage
will help to improve performance by increasing the
blood flow throughout the body. Increased muscle
tone and range of motion are also among the
benefits.
This will help your dog to remain flexible, maintain
good balance, posture and over all wellness.
Massage before or after surgery can
greatly accelerate recovery, as well as boost the
immune system. Always get approval from your
veterinarian.
Please note:
Massage is not a substitute for veterinary care. It
is not meant to cure or diagnose an illness or
disease. Always consult with your veterinarian.
